Color Trends in Salon Design

Color is a key factor when designing a salon. Color sets the stage, creating the mood and the experience that stimulate the senses. In fact, research shows that color causes physical responses on the body and mind.

When choosing a color scheme, keep a few things in mind:
  • How do you want your clients to feel in a particular space? Color can make them feel calm and relaxed or energetic and lively. Warmer, softer earth tones with wood accents can create a calming atmosphere. Using metals, glass and vibrant color accents can energize the space.
  • How long do you want your clients to occupy a space? Color can affect how the client perceives the length of stay in an area. For example, vibrant colors, which are very stimulating, energetic and lively, tend to be used in places with fast pace movements. However, softer hues of the same colors can be used to slow the movement to a more relaxing, calming experience. It's about creating calm in the midst of chaos.
The key to a successful salon is creating an appealing environment. Through careful color planning, you will give your clients such an enjoyable experience they look forward to returning before they've even left.

Maximizing Your Space

The key to maximizing your salon or spa space can be summed up in one word: organization. Keeping an orderly work environment and making the most of it requires repetition and effort. Being organized is the outgrowth of planning your space with an eye toward functionality and incorporating multi-function equipment and furniture design. In addition, this planning and organization process brings more efficiency to services by allowing you to more accurately schedule clients, which can increase revenue per hour.

Whether you have an existing space with a small budget or you’re obtaining a new space with a larger budget, you might consider these options:
  • Work with an interior designer who specializes in salons and spas to rework your existing space or design your new space
  • Your designer can work directly with your salon equipment sales/design consultant; some designers handle both roles
  • The interior designer can maximize your space by rearranging what you already have in a more functional and profitable way or design a new space using your prioritized wish list
  • Each area of your salon should be organized, functional and ergonomic – a benefit not only to you the owner, but for your employees and clients as well
Here are some other things to consider:

Reception. The reception desk is the hub and brain of any salon. The key to maximizing this space is planning outward from the reception desk. First, consider a laptop computer versus a desktop model because they’re compact and wireless. This will increase the desk top space available for other tasks like check writing or scheduling. If this is not an option for you, the second best option is a computer with a flat screen monitor. Secondly, pullout keyboards, cash drawers, printer/fax shelves and trash compartments, along with tip slots, can maximize space. In addition, if your salon is larger and requires more space for supplies, gift wrap and storage, a credenza behind the reception desk might be an option.

Retail. If you do not have a large salon and cannot afford to allocate a certain amount of space in reception for a retail/boutique area, the best way to incorporate and maximize retail space is by featuring point of purchase products for display at the reception desk. Another idea is to have an open retail showcase behind the reception desk to act as a divider separating the reception area and the styling area. Lastly, retail can be combined at the styling stations by incorporating retail shelves above the tool cabinet as well as in between back-to back-stations. This also showcases products that have been used by the stylist and clients may be more inclined to purchase these products before their visit is completed. Shelving can always be added wherever there is unused space on the walls. Retail display is a great way to maximize wall space.

Styling. There are many ways to situate your styling area per to increase the number of stations, which will increase your profitability. If you put the salon together yourself years ago, it’s possible that you’ve allotted too much space for stations. Here’s a tip, the industry minimum standard width a styling station requires is 54” wide; a color station requires a width of 48”. If it works for your salon stylists/colorists who do both, you might want to consider making all of your styling stations multi-function, meaning cut and color, at 54” wide. You can then reconstruct scheduling to accommodate the new versatility of employing both cut and color in one station. Depending on the square footage of your space, freestanding back-to-back stations might be better than stations that mount to the wall. Maximizing Your Space II

Here’s even more information about maximizing use of space in your salon or spa. As I mentioned in the last Belvedere e-flash, the key to making use of your space is organization. And organization is based on planning – that includes traffic patterns through your space, how people work and even how you’d like them to relax. Additional things to consider:

Dryers/Processors. Often overlooked in the planning stage of salon design, dryers are an important part of any hair-based business. The key reason for this may be the valuable real estate dryers require and the fact that they’re not a profit center. The best way to maximize the dryer/processor area is to use wall-mounted or ceiling-mounted dryers/processors in addition to or in place of a seated dryer/processor area. Another way to maximize dryer/processor space is to keep some wheeled units on hand that can be moved around from client to client when needed and can be stored in another location when not in use.

Shampoo. Thanks to their solid ergonomics, the backwash shampoo unit is favored hands down by most salons and spas. However, when small spaces are an issue, the use of all-in-one styling/shampoo units is the smart choice. These units are wider than the standard styling station, but only by six inches. This is a great way to maximize space in a smaller salon (it requires shampooing from the side). Another alternative that’s ergonomically correct is the European-style shampoo unit that allows you to support up to four styling stations from one shampoo station. The bowl actually turns 360 degrees and the shampoo service comes to the client versus client going to the shampoo service.

Dispensary. One sure way to maximize space is to locate this area in the staff/laundry/storage/utility area. Additionally, you can incorporate an open dispensary behind the shampoo area with the shampoo dispensers and towel cabinetry. This unit can incorporate your specific requirements. Clients can actually watch you, the artist, create the color palate you’re going to apply to their hair to implement their new image.

Staff/Laundry/Storage/Utility. Maximize space by incorporating cabinets that extend to the ceiling. You’ll increase storage space and your salon will appear neat and clean, regardless of your level of activity. Have the interior designer or salon equipment sales/design consultant design cabinetry with different compartments to suit your needs, such as a trash bin, broom closet and hamper drop for soiled linens. Purchase a stackable washer/dryer to maximize space even more.

Space gives us a sense of freedom; it helps us relax and feel good about life. A well-planned space helps us stay organized and feel in control – it can even reduce stress. But beyond everything else, a well-planned salon or spa speaks volumes about your business, your clients and you. Incorporating an optimized space plan ensures that your clients see the best your business has to offer everyday.

Emerging Trends in Salon Design

Salon design has seen a transformation from the glossy, black and white contrasts of the 1980s to the warmer and softer wood tones of the 1990s. Just as bell-bottomed pants from the 60s and 70s have made a recent comeback, today's salon décor has also come full-circle.

The earth tones that embodies the salons of the early to mid-seventies have re-emerged in a more upscale contemporary way; yet still convey a very warm, comfortable, and inviting feel. The hectic schedules and busy lifestyles of today's clients make this move to more comfortable surrounding a natural progression.

While comfort, elegance, and functionality remain important key design elements of today's salon, the emerging trend for the next decade is soothing work areas with fluid tonal contrasts that bask the client in an inviting and relaxing environment.

I create this total harmony through the use of lighting, material and layout. The overlying philosophy for this template must be one that is client-focused and centered on the ability of the space to provide both function and fashion.

As seasons change and warmth renews the life outdoors, the salon can become a reflection of that harmony and rejuvenation. The salon of today acts as a vehicle to give the client the same sense of renewal.

Color
Color is a basic element in the design of your salon. It affects us psychologically, emotionally and physically. Your staff and clients will react positively or negatively, but with color most people do not react indifferently. Color provides warmth, stimulation, a sense of well being and excitement. It is the major stimulus that affects our decision-making process.

You can use this to your benefit, when designing your salon. You and your designer will need to develop a concept that works best for your clientele, salon image and location. Take into consideration these points. The interior and exterior attracts the attention of potential clients, to ensure that the client desires to enter your salon. This environment should leave your client happy and comfortable when they are inside. When the client leaves the salon, they should leave feeling satisfied and with the desire to return.

Color will work for you in different ways. It can link one part of the salon to another, as well as tie an eclectic array of furnishings together. Your floor, walls and ceiling consists of 80% of the color in your salon, 20% will consist of furniture and accessories. When deciding on a color scheme, 75% is the main or basic color, 20% is a variation or complement to the main color. Small amounts of accent colors (about 5%) will add interest and create unusual and unique effects. Visually this will create a pleasing environment to work and visit.

There is a wide range of color schemes you can use. Two color schemes are monochromatic and complementary. Monochromatic consists of one color, using different shades, tints or tones. Complementary color scheme is colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel, which adds interest and excitement to an area. The color scheme you pick out can customize or personalize your environment.

New technologies in color design of material and new manufacturing techniques, open up your options for a unique color expression. Pearlescent, metallics, translucent, iridescence, three-dimensional applications and other special finishes bring character to your salon décor. Various materials, such as metals, woods, natural fibers, glass finished, and stone products can enhance your color schemes.

The hottest new trend is gardening and back to nature. Plants, natural materials, glass grown in pots all bring the simplicity of the outside, inside. Nature colors are earth tones colors and textures. With this in mind the use of texture and unique finishes can enhance overall appeal of your salon. Look outside at the trees, flowers, sky, the changing seasons, etc. to experience the calming and peaceful effects of nature. You'll see colors that are softer, lighter, calming colors and watery aquatic blues. We strive to achieve a balance between technology and our desire for all that is natural. With this in mind we need to create a harmonious balance in our space.

Tips for Purchasing Salon Furniture

Salon furniture purchasing can be the most important decision you make when designing or remodeling your salon. There are 6 steps that are integral to the furnishing of your salon:
  1. Plan ahead. Begin the purchasing process at least 90 days before your expected opening. Allow for unexpected delays. It's a good idea to schedule your grand opening at least 30 days after your expected opening date.
  2. See for yourself. Visit a show room to be sure the furniture you have selected is the same quality and design that the literature depicts.
  3. Service. Purchase your salon equipment from a dealer that can and will service it. Are they close by and available? Do they demonstrate knowledge and a commitment to your success after the sale?
  4. Other costs. There are other costs associated with furniture: delivery cost, installation cost, and storage fees. Make sure you receive estimates from your dealer.
  5. Check references. If you are purchasing from a dealer that offers design assistance, be sure to ask for and visit their references. This often will give you a quick view of the quality and type of work your dealer has done.
  6. Quality drives return on investment. Remember when deciding what to purchase that Quality of Salon = Quality of Stylists = Quality of Clients = Quality of Income.
Following these six basic steps will insure that your new salon will be a less stressful and more productive experience.
